Welcome to Claypit Hill Physical Education with Mrs. LeBaron!
Physical education at Claypit Hill School focuses on movement concepts, both locomotor and non-locomotor concepts and skills, manipulative and non-manipulative skills and fitness, as well as having fun, cooperating with others, teamwork, honesty and respect. Students are exposed to various units that cover each of these concepts. Units that we cover include cooperative games that require cooperation and teamwork as well as throwing and catching, striking with body parts/ implements and dribbling with feet and hands. Below you will find a more specific breakdown of the units and skills we practice by grade level.
Kindergarten and 1st grade In kindergarten and first grade our students work on locomotor skills such as walking, jogging, running, skipping, etc., spacial awareness (using general space and self-space), both manipulative (throwing, catching, kicking, striking and dribbling) and non-manipulative skills (turning, twisting, and stretching), directions, pathways and effort (fast, medium, and slow).
2nd and 3rd grade Second and third grade students work on applying movement concepts to games and activities as well as recognize the importance of the main components of fitness. Students work to refine their catching, throwing, kicking, striking and dribbling skills all while applying them in a game or activity setting.
4th and 5th grade Fourth and fifth graders incorporate a variety of mature movement patterns into games or activities. They understand the main components of fitness and recognize how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Sportsmanship and cooperation are key goals in many of the games and activities that our 4th and 5th graders participate in. Skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, striking and dribbling are revisited and further developed throughout the year.
*Please be sure your child has appropriate footwear on the day they have P.E.. This will ensure they can participate in each activity each day. When unsafe footwear is worn students are given an alternate activity to do and they miss out on the fun!
CURRENTLY HAPPENING IN P.E.!
Kindergarten and 1st graders -We are learning the proper technique for throwing overhand and underhand. Students are practicing these skills both individually and in groups. We like to learn and have fun so we play games like "pin guard" and "clean up the backyard" to demonstrate our skills!
2nd and 3rd graders -We are working on refining our throwing skills. 2nd graders are working on their accuracy with overhand and underhand throwing using a foam ball. 3rd graders are learning how to properly grip and throw a spiral with a football. 2nd graders play games like "pin guard", "battleship" and "team pin battle" to reinforce their throwing skills. 3rd graders are putting their football throwing skills to use in modified football games.
4th and 5th graders -We have started our official football unit. Both 4th and 5th graders have learned the proper grip on a football as well as the throwing cues to throw a spiral. All 4th and 5th graders are playing modified football games and they each get to choose if they would like to play in a more competitive game with keeping score or just play for fun and continue to practice their skills and learn the game of football.
